It all began with a Christmas present in 1969. 16-year-old Mike Kettridge was working in his parents' kitchen on a gift for his mum that had to be absolutely unique. After some deliberation, he decided on a candle, which he made from whatever he could find around the house. His first work was bought by neighbours so that the boy could get money for materials. He would never have dreamed that it would become the world-famous Yankee Candle company. But the luxurious scented candles quickly became so popular that the company was able to open its own factory and shop in 1974. Since then, the scented candles and the expanded portfolio, which also includes room fragrances, have been on a steep upward trajectory. Today, there are more than 35,000 sales outlets worldwide and over 6,000 employees involved in the production of room fragrances, scented candles, accessories, gifts and car fragrances.
